Roy Halladay requires surgery for bone spur, no timetable set, announced at press conference.

Phillies right-hander pitcher Roy Halladay has a bone spur in his right shoulder that will require minor surgery to clean up. He is optimistic that he will be able to come back and be effective and pitch. He announced at a press conference at 2 pm this afternoon in San Francisco. There is no indication that this is a career ending injury, but any injury that requires surgery at this point in a veteran's career could turn out for the worse. He will move quickly on this so that he can be back as soon as possible. Halladay is still waiting on test results to make final decisions.

He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday after inflammation in his right shoulder. The shoulder has been bothering him since April 24th after pitching against the Pirates. He had that shoulder examined on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles and rejoined the team in San Francisco for the game on Tuesday night. After the game he spent an extended time in a closed door meeting with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and manager Charlie Manuel. He has struggled this season with an 8.65 ERA and a 2-4 record so far. His last two outings have been particularly disappointing, going 0-2 with 6 IP, 17 ER, 13 H, and 4 HR.

Halladay was drafted 17th overall by the Toronto Blue Jay's in 1995. He played in Toronto from 1998 through 2009. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2003 with a 22â€“7 record and a 3.25 ERA, including 204 strikeouts and only 32 walks. He was traded to Philadelphia after the 2009 season for minor league prospects. Halladay threw a perfect game on May 29, 2010 against the Marlins and a no-hitter on October 6, 2010 against the Cincinnati Reds in the NLDS to become the first player to throw two no-hitters in a season since Nolan Ryan in 1973. The perfect game was also the 20th perfect game in history, and the post-season no-hitter was only the second ever. For his carreer, â€œDocâ€ Halladay has a record of 201â€“104, 3.37 ERA, 2,101 , 67 complete games, 20 shutouts, 1.17 WHIP.
