Tens of Thousands of runners will hit Broad Street tomorrow morning heading from Olney to the Navy Yard in the ten mile Broad Street Run. This year the race bibs were a premium as a lottery system this past winter was used just to get access to register. Everyone from the elite racers to those just hoping to finish will be lacing up with the start going off at 8:30 a.m. Security and surveillance will be heightened around the race as this is the first major running event in Philadelphia since the Boston Marathon bombing just a few weeks ago. No backpacks, coolers, or bags other than the clear racers' bags will be allowed in the start or finish areas. The Philadelphia Police will also be using mobile surveillance systems throughout the 10 mile race course. Many of the runners have chosen to wear red socks to show support for those injured, killed, and affected by the events in Boston. Sunday race time weather will perfect; partly sunny and around 50 degrees. Good Luck to all the runners! Have Fun!

SEPTA Broad Street Run information
Registered runners get a free ride on the Broad Street Line to the race's starting line at Broad and Somerville Streets. There will be special northbound express trains will run every 10 minutes from AT&T Station (Stadiums) near the finish line from 5:35 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
The following bus routes will be temporarily detoured from Broad Street from 8:00 till the end of the race: 3, 4, 7, 9, 12, 15 Shuttle, 16, 17, 21, 42, 23, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 37, 38, 39, 40, 43, 44, 48, 53, 54, 56, 60, 61, 64, 68, 75, 79, 124, 125, G, J, H, XH and R.
A woman was pulled from the water and revived in Fishtown on Saturday morning. It happened at around 9 am in the Delaware River behind the Sugar House Casino on Delware Ave. The Philadelphia Police Marine Unit was called to the scene and was able to rescue her from the river and resusicitate her with CPR. She was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition. There is no word on how the woman ended up in the river.
A blind woman in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia is crediting her guide dog with saving her life and thwarting burglars. The incident happened on Friday at 3 a.m. on the 4700 block of Marple Street. Police say that several men, including the woman's 18-year-old neighbor Tomayo McDuffy, broke into the 54-year-old woman's home. The woman's dog, Jolanda, heard the men and chased them out of the house, barking agressively. The woman woke up to the noise. The burglars, though, turned on the gas on the stove on their way out filling the house with deadly fumes. Jolonda is trained to hit an emergency 9-1-1 button to call police and the signal went out. She was able to lead her owner to a phone but help was already on its way. McDuffy has been charged with attempted murder, burglary and other charges. He is in jail on $500,000 bail. Police are searching for another suspect. |
