Council Passed Bill Advertising on City Property; Pool Fumes in NJ High; Social Security Closures

Philadelphia City Council passed a bill 15-0 to allow advertising on city owned property. The next steps would be to determine which city properties and buildings would be appropriate for advertising. The Nutter administration would be in charge of signing a contract with a vendor that would manage the advertising. The city hopes to generate millions in revenue from the advertising, but could cost the city in tax penalties if too much revenue is generated on certain buildings. The first avenue could be turning all those city trash trucks into giant advertisements for Hefty trash bags, just like SEPTA transit advertising. Maybe William Penn could model the latest from the Victoria's Secret catalog?

More than two dozen high school students in South Jersey were sent to the hospital today after a reaction with pool chemicals created noxious fumes in the school. The incident happened at Mainland Regional High School in Linwood. The entire school was evacuated and the school ventilated. After-school activities were held as usual. 28 students were taken to a hospital complaining of nausea and headaches. No one was seriously hurt.

The Social Security Administration has closed three of its Philadelphia area offices due to budget cutbacks. The three offices are located in Jenkintown, and in Philadelphia on Woodland Ave and now 15th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. That last office, in North Philly, served about 100 people per day. Those people will now have to travel to Center City to 2 Penn Center at 15th and JFK Boulevard. The seniors, who the community office serviced, don't know how they'll get to the new location. Many are in wheelchairs or use canes and walkers, and traveling downtown will be very difficult. They hope they can rally to have the office reopened, but with the budget constraints across the country it may be hard to convince the SSA to reopen a single office.
