Once the weather and the ground warm up, some parts of the Delaware Valley will see one of nature's spectacles - the mass emergence of a mess of periodical cicadas that have taken 17 years to mature. It looks as if the Magicicada swarms will be localized - and a lot depends on what's happened since their parents saw sunlight. They only live a couple of weeks - enough time to mate and start a new 17-year cycle.

Equality Forum kicks of its free annual Global Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered summit tomorrow. It’s a four-day global summit of educational programming designed to enhance understanding issues that are specific to the LGBT community. This year, the summit includes 30 panel discussions, art exhibits, workshops, parties and other events. Events run May 2nd through 5th. Highlights include the International Equality Dinner honoring former Congressman Barney Frank and SundayOUT- a night of Dancing on the Piazza in Northern Liberties. All events are open to the public and most are free. For more info and a full schedule, go to equalityforum.com.

The Philadelphia gym where former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier lived and trained has been named to the National Register of Historic Places. Preservation officials say they were notified Tuesday of the designation by the National Park Service. They say it will help protect the building and commemorate Frazier’s legacy. Frazier converted the three-story north Philadelphia building into a gym in 1968. He lived upstairs and trained downstairs. For decades after his retirement, the space served as a neighborhood anchor. But Frazier sold the building in 2008, and it’s now partially occupied by a furniture store. The gym sign is still visible. The National Trust for Historic Preservation last year placed the gym on its list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
Frazier died of liver cancer in 2011.
