PPA and Sidecar Compromise, FREE Rides!; Fire at Nifty Fiftys; Cherry Hill Car Crash into Building

The Philadelphia Parking Authority and San Fransisco-based Sidecar have come to a compromise that will allow the ride-sharing company to continue to operate in the city. Simply, Sidecar cannot accept any compensation for rides. "I can confirm that rides are free in Philly this weekend," Sidecar spokeswoman Margaret Ryan said. Sidecar offers rides through its smartphone app. A rider requests a car, giving their location and destination, and a private driver in a private car will show up to give them a ride. The transaction is supposed to be paid for with a suggested “donation” to the driver. The PPA wasn't buying the “donation” saying this was just an unregulated taxi service, or just a high tech 'hack' cab. A sting nabbed three drivers, impounded their cars, and were assessed $1,000's in fines. A legit taxi medallion in Philadelphia could cost $450,000 per car, so authorities are keen to stop anyone trying to subvert that regulation. Public safety is also a concern. Public cabs have to be licensed, insured, and inspected and drivers need to complete thorough training. There is no guarantee that the now free Sidecar drivers meet any public safety standards. Here are Sidecar's official safety guidelines: http://www.side.cr/safety

Fire broke out at Nifty Fifty's, the popular restaurant in Folsom, Delaware County, Saturday afternoon around 4:00pm. Nifty Fifty's is located on the 1900 block of Macdade Boulevard near Rt. 420. Heavy fire was reported from the ceiling and walls. The flames were quickly contained by 4:30 pm. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Nifty Fifty's plans to reopen on Monday.

A driver lost control on Rt. 38 in Cherry Hill on Saturday Night and crashed through the front window of the Liberty Travel agency and into the building. This happened on the 1500 block of Route 38 at around 9:30 pm. Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing through the building. Two people were taken to Cooper Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
