Apartment Fire in Lansdowne, 1 dead; Pro-Gun Rally in Doylestown; New Paulsboro Train Bridge

An apartment fire this morning in Lansdowne has left one woman dead and 30 residents displaced. The fire alarms went off at around 5 am when a fire broke out in a third floor apartment in the building at 32 Wycombe Avenue in Lansdowne. Some residents thought it might have been a drill and others slept through the alarms, until Lansdowne police officers began knocking on doors getting everyone out of the building. Everyone was able to escape except the one woman who lived in the apartment where the fire started. Residents describe her as very friendly and pleasant, well liked and always greeting them. She has been identified as 51-year-old Margaret McClernan. The building contains 24 one and two bedroom apartments and was damaged by the fire, water, and smoke. The Red Cross is supporting around 30 residents who won't be able to return home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A Pro-Gun Rights rally in Doylestown today drew around 150 advocates in front of the Bucks County courthouse. The attendees were all there to show their support of the Second Amendment and to protest firearm restrictions. Though most were not worried that their guns were going to be taken away, they were very concerned about recent gun control proposals by President Obama. Attendees carried rifles and waved signs during the demonstration.

The movable train bridge in Paulsboro, NJ that was the site of a train derailment and chemical spill last November will be replaced. The new swing bridge that spans the Mantua Creek should be operational in September 2014. Until the new bridge is complete the old bridge will continue to be used, but the waterway will be inaccessible to boaters. Last year, a half dozen cars derailed and fell into the creek, one of which ruptured spilling vinyl chloride into the air and water. More than 300 nearby homes and businesses were evacuated for a week while the cleanup and investigation was conducted. A signaling problem and alignment/locking problem was part of the cause. Building a new bridge will take just as long as repairing the current bridge.
