C. Everett Koop, ex-Surgeon General, Dies; Gunfire Hits SEPTA Bus; Elderly Man Duct Taped 6 Hours

The former U.S. Surgeon General and Surgeon in Chief at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. C. Everett Koop, has passed away Monday in New Hampshire at age 96. Appointed to Surgeon General by President Reagan, Dr. Koop controversially pushed for increased sex education and use of condoms at the beginnings of the HIV epidemic, enraging many conservatives and religious who saw him as going against his base. Koop was also a stalwart against tobacco, calling it as addictive as heroin and crack, and vowed to rid smoking and nicotine addiction from American society. Koop was a devout Presbyterian but did not allow his religious views to dictate his policies. Prior to his government post, Koop worked at CHOP for 35 years pioneering surgical and anesthetic techniques for infants, creating the first neo-natal surgical intensive care unit, and performing surgery to separate conjoined twins.

Gunfire hit a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia at 56th and Market Streets early Monday around 12:50 am. A passenger on the bus had to be treated after shattered glass struck her in the eye. The Route G bus was shot through the windshield with two bullets on the driver's side. There were 6 passengers on the bus at the time. That particular bus does not have surveillance cameras. Police do not have a suspect and are looking into surveillance from the surrounding area.

Police are looking for two suspects who broke into an elderly man's home and left him taped up for hours after they ransacked and burglarized his house. It happened to 74-year-old Etolia Fox at around 10:00 am on the 4700 block of Marvine Street in the Logan section of Philadelphia. The two men came in with scarves on their face and handguns. The bound his wrists, ankles, and mouth with duct tape. Mr. Fox was stuck on the second floor for six hours until his wife came home at 4:30 pm. The brazen thieves made off with $160 in cash, a flat screen TV, a computer and other items. Police hope that anyone in the neighborhood saw something, maybe even these men carrying the items out of the home.
