NCAA sues PA Gov Corbett; Philly Summer Olympics 2024; Bensalem Gun Buyback; Coatesville Crash

The NCAA has sued in federal court just a few hours after Gov. Tom Corbett signed legislation into law today that is designed to keep the $60 million fine levied against Penn State following the Sandusky scandal inside the state of Pennsylvania. The law is called the Pennsylvania Institution of Higher Education Monetary Penalty Endowment Act. The defendents in the suit include Corbett and three state officials involved in handling or monitoring the money: the auditor general, treasurer and chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. State officials drafted the law because they did not want the NCAA fine to finance child abuse prevention efforts in other states. In its suit, the NCAA argues that the state does not have the power to amend/adjust the consent decree between Penn State and the NCAA and that the state is not entitled to collect and manage the money involved in that contract. The NCAA says the new law is unconstitutional. In January, Corbett filed his own suit saying the consent decrees violated anti-trust laws and should be thrown out altogether.

Philly Summer Olympics 2024? It is still a far fetched possibility at this point. The United States Olympic Committee has begun to reach out to the 25 largest cities in the country to gauge interest from those who might be willing to place a bid. Philadelphia was one of 5 finalist cities in the United States for the 2016 games, but got cut when the field was trimmed to 3. The prospect of becoming an Olympic host city involves a budget of $3 billion, years of construction and infrastructure improvement, facilities, hotels, venues, and an Olympic Village for 16,500. All of that does mean many jobs, but it doesn't always mean the host city is left any better than it was before the Olympics. Bensalem Township Police Department recently held two gun buybacks, on February 6th and 16th. People were able to bring in the weapons in exchange for $50 to $200, no questions asked. The tally was 586 firearms - including 9 assault rifles and 152 semiautomatic handguns.

Two people have been seriously injured after a crash in Chester County. The crash occurred just after 9:00 p.m. in the 2500 block of East Kings Highway in Coatesville. Two vehicles crashed and one overturned. Two people were taken to Paoli Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
