Temple Fires Called Arson, Hite's Updated School Closures, Villanova Hazmat Incident

Federal and local investigators are on the lookout for someone who is setting fires at the construction site of a new dormitory on Temple University's campus. Five fires in two days, causing about $100,000 in damages, have investigators converging at the construction site at Broad and Cecil B. Moore streets. An arson task force is now working to gather evidence from Temple's Morgan Hall construction site where authorities say three fires were intentionally set on Monday and two more on Tuesday.

Superintendent William Hite told a City Council hearing on Tuesday that he will announce an updated school closure plan next week. Hite says some of the 37 schools could come off of the closure list. The School Reform Commission will vote on the closures on March 7th.

Ten students were sickened during a hazardous materials incident at Villanova University Tuesday. EMS units responded to a hazardous materials incident in the area of Mendel Hall. A chemistry class was doing an experiment when one student had an asthma attack. Several other students then reported they were not feeling well. The incident was due to a situation resulting from a lab experiment taking place on the buildingâ€™s third floor. School officials say the situation has been contained and the building remains closed.
