55th Grammy Awards Hands Out Awards to Indie Acts; Black Keys, Fun., Mumford, Goyte the Big Winners

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards held tonight in the Staples Center in Los Angeles was full of great performances and collaborations, not too many surprises, and more than quite a few awards given out to bands considered indie acts not too long ago (or still are to many of their early fans).

Taylor Swift opened the show with a performance of "We Are Never Getting Back Together" with an elaborate 'Alice in Wonderland' theme full of dancers and circus performers. LL Cool J took over as host and expressed his appreciation and love for music and the Grammy awards and how winning meant a dream come true.

Edward Sheeran and Elton John performed a stripped down duet of Sheeran's "The A Team" on piano and acoustic guitar. Adele took home the first award on the telecast for Best Pop Solo Performance for "Set Fire To The Rain (Live)".

fun. played "Carry On" on a subdued set that actually rained on the band mid-song before simulating the sun coming out. fun. won Song of the Year for "We Are Young." They also took home Best New Artist. Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley dueted on each other's songs. Miguel and Wiz Khalifa performed "Adorn" in the crowd before presenting Best Solo Country Performance, naturally, to Carrie Underwood for "Blown Away."

Justin Timberlake made his return to the stage after his 6 year foray into acting. He performed the recently released single "Suit & Tie" followed by a new song he played during the Saturday Superbowl concert called "Push Your Love Girl." He showed he hasn't lost anything along the way in a solid performance backed by a large band and string ensemble.

The Black Keys won Best Rock Rock Performance and Dan Auerbach won for Producer of the Year, non-classical, among a strong field. They also won for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song. Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys performed together with Keys on drums (snare and floor tom) for "Girl on Fire." Adam Levine put his falsetto to the test in belting out the accompaniment. Rihanna had an emotional performance of "Stay" with backing vocals by Mikky Ekko. Ekko was featured on the track on Rihanna's Unapologetic album.

The Black Keys, Dr. John, and Preservation Jazz Band performed a raucous rendition of "Lonely Boy." Kelly Clarkson sang a tribute to Patti Page and Carol King with a medley of "Tennessee Waltz" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."

In a highly anticipated performance, Bruno Mars took the stage and played his hit "Locked Out of Heaven" which admittedly was influenced by sound of The Police. He was joined on stage by Sting during the song. They segued right into The Police's "Walking On The Moon." Rihanna, Ziggy and Stephen Marley joined them all for "Could You Be Loved?" as a tribute to Bob Marley and his influence on the greater world of music.

The Lumineers had the crowd going with an 'intimate' rendition of their chart climbing "Ho Hey." They introduced Jack White who played "Love Interruption" with his all-girl band before hoping over to his all-guy band and ripping it up and throwing the guitar at the end.

Hunter Hayes played a piece of "Wanted" as an intro to Carrie Underwood. She took to the main stage to sing "Blow Away" and "Two Black Cadillacs." Her dress was used as a screen to project various scenes onto. As a surprise guest presenter, Prince came out to award Record of the Year to Gotye for "Somebody That I Used to Know." Gotye also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Alternative Album.

Jay-Z and Kanye West were also big winners taking home 3 Grammys. They won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for "N****s in Paris" and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "No Church in the Wild." Frank Ocean was expected to win more awards, but he did capture Best Urban Contemporary Album for Channel Orange.

The Grammys will give out a new award next year for music teachers. To nominate your favorite music teacher go to: www.grammymusicteacher.com.

Zac Brown, Elton John, T Bone Burnett, Mavis Staples, Mumford & Sons, and Brittany Howard of The Alabama Shakes performed The Band's "The Weight" as a tribute to those who passed this passed year, in particular Levon Helm.

The big award Album of the Year went to Mumford and Sons for Babel, the sophomore followup to 2010's critically acclaimed Sigh No More.

The grand finale featured the impossible supergroup of Blink-182's Travis Barker, Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, DJ Z-Trip, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy's Chuck D. They tore up the stage as the credits fell on another Grammy night.
