Explosion on SEPTA Overpass; SUV Drove 100 MPH in Crash; Philadelphia Soul to be Sold

There was an explosion earlier this evening on a train overpass at 30th and Cecil B Moore in Brewerytown. The explosion caused the Chestnut Hill West and Trenton Regional Rail lines to shut down for 37 minutes from 6 to 6:37 p.m. There was no damage to the train tracks, but a small crater was left. Initially it was thought that a transformer explosion was the cause of the blast, but the bomb squad also determined it was not an actual explosive device. Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Authorities say that there are no immediate links to terrorism, but the investigation is ongoing. "The bomb squad was called and determined that ... there was an explosion of some kind creating a roughly two-foot deep crater," Mayor Michael Nutter's spokesman Mark McDonald said. "Police radio learned there were two males that were picked up by EMS in the area of the bridge and taken to Saint Joseph's Hospital with minor injuries, scraps and cuts, injuries that possibly you might see with an explosion." After bomb sniffing dogs ruled out the presence of explosives, inspectors believe the powerful explosion was some kind of 'thermic reaction' like an icicle broke off and hit a power line. The two people injured were in a nearby SUV that got hit with concrete debris.

Authorities estimate a SUV was traveling 100 mph when it struck another car killing a mother and daughter in Merchantville, NJ on Thursday. Anada Medina, 36, and her 18-year-old daughter, Stephanie Garcia were in their Honda Odyssey when a Dodge Durango hit them head on at the intersection of Chapel and Russell Aves. The crash happened at around 3:40 pm. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office say that the Durango may have been traveling up to 100 mph in a 25 mph zone when it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the Odyssey. The 31-year-old male driver of the SUV and female passenger are in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital.

The Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League will be put up for sale next week. Majority owner Craig Spencer said that he could sell just his majority interest or the entire team could be sold, it all depends on potential bidders in the process. The Soul was founded in 2004 by Specer and rocker Jon Bon jovi for the franchise fee of $15 million. Spencer would not speculate on the current value of the team. His ideal situation would be to just sell his interest, keeping the other owner's interests intact. Spencer will also give high priority to bidders who want to keep the team in Philadelphia. Other current owners of the teams include Ron Jaworski, Pete Ciarrocchi, Cosmo DiNicola and Martin Judge. Bon Jovi is no longer affiliated.
