Arrest Old City Brawl Video; Gerard Shaffer Jr. Acquitted; Hostess Selling Wonder, No Philly Bakery

A South Jersey man is under arrest after an early morning brawl in Old City Sunday morning in which he shot at another man. Officers responded to the shot and found a crowd fighting in the middle of 2nd Street between Market and Chestnut at 2:30 am. When they attempted to apprehend a suspect a gun fell out of his waistband. Police attempted to taser him, however he fled, but was captured soon after. 28-year-old Christopher Mcrae of Camden, NJ is charged with carrying an unlicensed firearm, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and other offenses. The incident was captured on video by people standing by.

A Philadelphia jury acquitted Gerard Shaffer Jr. of third-degree murder and conspiracy in the death of 54-year-old Mark Wallace in April 2010. Instead they convicted the Philadelphia man of involuntary manslaughter. Shaffer was charged along with his father who passed away before the trial began. This was deemed a â€œroad rageâ€ attack on a pedestrian. When a presumably drunk Wallace crossed in front of the Shaffer's car he lingered after the horn was honked and words were exchanged. It became violent when Shaffer Sr. came out of the car. Witnesses saw Shaffer Jr. give Wallace a bear hug and drop him over his shoulders behind him. Sentencing will be in March. It will take into account 6 months already served.

Hostess Brands may have found a home for it's famous Wonder Bread as well as Nature's Pride and Merita brands. Flower Foods, based in Thomasville, GA, has put in a bid of $360 million to buy the breads. Flower Foods is also the owner of our own beloved Tastykakes and the South Philly Tasty Baking Co., however the proposed deal does not currently include acquisition of the former Northeast Philadelphia Blue Grass Road Hostess plant. Hostess did have distribution centers in King of Prussia, Wilmington and down the Shore. Bimbo (locally based in Horsham) may also have interest in the Hostess snack cake business.
