Snowy Sat. in Philadelphia; Two Gloucester Officers Leave Hospital; New Temple University President

Snow blanketed Philadelphia today causing a few power outages in Northeast Philadelphia. Those were restored by the afternoon to 1300 customers. Roads may have been slick and visibilities low early on, but only a few accidents were reported around the region. Mainly the snow left us with just enough snow to make the landscape look picture perfect for the season without causing enough havoc for anyone's travels. The average snow fall around Philadelphia was around 3.5 inches.

Two of the three officers shot on Friday inside Gloucester Township police station have been released from the hospital. The third officer, Sgt. James Garber, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen and remains hospitalized until at least Sunday. The shooter, Eddie Jones III, 39 of Willingboro, was a NJ state Department of Corrections civilian employee who was accused of stalking a former girlfriend. He arrived at police headquarters in handcuffs, which were removed for a short time for processing. During that time he overpowered and diarmed Officer Ruth Burns. Jones then fired at Burns and two other officers, Garber and Sgt. Kevin Thine when they came to assist Burns. Garber and Thine returned fire and Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Burns was shot in her foot. Thine suffered a cut to his abdomen and graze wound to his head. Garber was shot multiple times but was saved by his vest.

Temple University's incoming president, Neil D. Theobald, will take office on Monday, however, he will postpone his April inauguration speech until October. Theobald wants to take the extra six months to develop his plan for the future of the university before spelling out his agenda. Theobald has spent his years in academia. He is coming from the job as senior vice president and chief financial officer at Indiana University. He spent 20 years at Indiana University and before that a professor at the University of Washington. Theobald has been slowly integrating into campus life talking with faculty, students, alumni, community and business leaders. One of the most important concerns Theobald intends to address in the cost of education. Temple still has a fairly low in-state tuition at $13,006.
