Villanova QB Wins Jerry Rice Award; Teen Arrested in El Shooting; Paulsboro Bridge Reopens

Villanova's red shirt Freshman QB John Robertson took home the Jerry Rice Award on Monday night after being named the top freshman in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Hall of Fame Receiver Jerry Rice himself was on hand at the Society Hill Sheraton in Philadelphia at the FCS Award Ceremony to hand Robertson the trophy. Robertson took control of the 'Nova offense in the second half of the season opener against Temple at the Linc. A true dual threat under center he threw 152-of-253 passes (60-percent) for 1,965 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and ran for 1,021 yards on 189 carries (5.4 avg.) and a team-high 14 rushing TDs. He was the first Villanova QB to run for 1,000 yards in a season. Villanova was 8-4 on the season and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Stony Brook. They bounced back off a 2-9 record in 2011. Robertson still has three years left to play. Head Coach Andy Talley said, “We have a great team coming back, and we’ll build everything around John.”

Philadelphia Police have picked up one of the two brothers who were allegedly involved in the shooting last week on a SEPTA subway in West Philly. The younger brother, 16-year-old Eric Early, is in custody and being questioned by Southwest detectives. They are still looking for his older brother, 18-year-old Matthew Early. They believe they are the two caught on surveillance video turning and firing into the crowded El car just after exiting the train. The incident began on the train after a Sixers game. “Trash talking” between a man in his thirties wearing a Bulls jersey and two teens turned to profanities. The man said, “Listen, this train’s filled with people, there’s young kids, there’s ladies, you need to watch your mouth, young boy.” Another man said, “Listen, it’s not worth it. These young boys, just let’s cool out.” When the train stopped at 46th and Market the teens got off, then one of them turned and fired the shot into the car. The shot went through one man and hit the other in the leg. Both men are in stable condition.

The Paulsboro bridge over Mantua Creek that was the site of a derailment and chemical spill on November 30th was back in operation as of Sunday afternoon. The Federal Railroad Administration conducted two test runs and completed their final inspection just a few hours after the last derailed tanker car was removed from the site. The reopening happened so quickly after the cleanup was finished because repairs had been going on simultaneously. The locking mechanism requires all four locks to be in place for a green light to signal. An FRA spokesman said "the timing of this inspection was typical for bridge inspections." Area trade groups and businesses had begun to question when the bridge would be open. Several factories had suspended operations while they wait to be resupplied from the freight line. The cause of the crash and the damage to the bridge won't be known for some time. The NTSB is not expected to complete it's investigation for another 12 to 18 months.
