Shooting at Connecticut Elementary School leaves 27 dead, including many children

This story is still evolving but a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT has left 28 people dead. Most of the victims are school children. The school principal, school psychologist, and the gunman are also dead. Another teacher was wounded and being treated at the hospital. This is one of the worst mass shootings in United States history.

A total of 28 people are dead. 20 children, six adults, and the shooter were found at the scene. 18 of the kids were killed at the school and two died at the hospital. They were all between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. The shooter apparently died at his own hand. Another was found dead at a Newtown home.

The shooter had been preliminarily identified as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, originally from Newtown, CT now living in Hoboken, NJ. However, there was confusion over that identification. It is now reported that the shooter was instead his younger brother, 20-year-old Adam Lanza.

Lanza's mother, Nancy, was initially thought to be a Kindergarten teacher at the elementary school, but investigators are not able to establish a connection with her to the school. She was found shot dead at their home in Newtown.

Adam Lanza dressed in all black and forced entry into the school with two handguns (Glock and Sig Sauer 9mm's) at around 9:30 a.m. A third weapon (.223 Bushmaster rifle) was found in a car in the parking lot. All three guns were legally purchased by Lanza's mother. The shooting was confined to 2 rooms inside the school building, the kindergarten and first-grade.

The school has about 700 students in grades up to 4th. Other schools in the district were placed under lockdown. Students at Sandy Hook were led out of the building, most in shock, scared and crying. During the attack teachers locked their doors, hid children in closets and bathrooms, and feared for their lives.

Police are not speculating on a motive at this point. They are interviewing Ryan Lanza in Hoboken, NJ and his father who lives in CT. Investigators questioned Ryan for hours on Friday night and have released him. They are confident he had nothing to do with his brother's plan and was very cooperative. He told investigators that he hasn't spoken to Adam in a year but that he did suffer from mental issues.

President Obama was notified of the shooting at 10:30 this morning and was updated throughout the day. He has ordered flags to be flown at half mast.

The investigation is in it's preliminary stages, ongoing, and evolving.
