PennDOT Storm Prep, Giving Tuesday, Cherry Hill Smoking Ban

PennDOT brined expressways and salted roads well in advance of today's storm. The Philadelphia Streets Department said it was concentrating on primary roads, bridges and areas of high elevation where slippery spots develop. As much as an inch of slushy snow's expected in the city, and one to three inches in Philadelphia's northern and western suburbs.

A new tradition started today to counter the spending frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Itâ€™s called "Giving Tuesday," and businesses large and small were jumping onboard. It started with big charities like United Way and the Red Cross, but small businesses can also contribute charitably. The goal behind â€œGiving Tuesdayâ€ is to focus on charities, instead of retail. For many organizations, itâ€™s a way to increase fund-raising in the race to the end of the year.

Cherry Hill Council members passed an ordinance Monday night that will ban smoking in any Township-owned area. The law makes it illegal to smoke on any public property, including Town Hall, the Cherry Hill Public Library, the Department of Public Works, on Township-owned trails and at any of Cherry Hillâ€™s 52 public parks and playgrounds. The change takes effect in mid-December, but full enforcement will begin in January, according to officials. At some point in between, there will be a 30-day public educational period. Violators can face up to a $150 fine for a first offense; up to $300 for a second offense; and as much as $500 for subsequent offenses.
