Veterans' Day in Philadelphia; Hostess Bakery workers on Strike; Eagles lose to Cowboys

Veterans from all our nation's wars were honored all over the Philadelphia area today. Mayor Nutter was at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Washington Square Military Cemetery at 7th and Walnut this morning for a wreath laying ceremony with veterans. Nutter said, â€œThis day and everyday let us say thank you . Thank you for your service, thank you for your commitment, thank you for your dedication, thank you for serving the greatest country in the world; The United States of America.â€ Ceremonies were also held at the National Constitution Center with the 28th Division Band of the Pennsylvania National Guard, including a flag raising and wreath laying. The Battleship New Jerseyheld a ceremony honoring Andrew Chmiel who was a member of the 6th Naval Beach Battalion which stormed Normandy Beach during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. Many other communities had ceremonies, parades, or events honoring those who have served so that we can be free. We salute all our veterans.

Hundreds of workers are on strike at the Hostess Bakery at Blue Grass Road and Grant Ave in Northeast Philadelphia. This was the second day of picket lines at the bakery that bakes Wonder Bread, Twinkies, and Ding Dongs for the Hostess Company, presently going through it's second bankruptcy. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union is protesting wage and benefit cuts imposed by the struggling company in a new contract that went into effect Friday. Hostess Brands Inc. acknowledged the concessions were tough but urged workers to stay on the job to help rebuild the company. The company employees around 18,000 at bakeries nationwide. There are 330 workers on strike here at the Philadelphia bakery. Wages are being cut an average of 8% and benefits an estimated 32%. The company is also stopping pension contributions. The strike started at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

Eagles lose to Cowboys 38-23 falling to 3-6 on the season and extending their losing streak to 5 games. QB Michael Vick left the game in the 2nd quarter with a concussion, rookie QB Nick Foles made his NFL debut finishing 21-31 with an INT and a TD.
