Governor Christie lifted a mandatory evactuation order on Thursday that is permitting thousands of residents and business owners to return to the shore in Atlantic and Cape May Counties to inspect their properties after the devastating Frankenstorm. Before the ban was lifted shore towns were guarded like the Mexican border or Area 51. Brigantine, Margate, and Longport in Atlantic County and Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and West Wildwood now were allowing entry if drivers could prove they lived or work there. A mandatory curfew remained in effect between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Ventnor and Atlantic City remained closed. Long Beach Island may not open for another week as front end loaders work to dig out the streets and gas leaks are turned off and fixed. The line of traffic going down the Atlantic City Expressway from the Philadelphia area extended for miles as people were eager to see what Hurricane Sandy may have done to their homes and to get started on the cleanup and rebuild.
In the Philadelphia area, over 175,000 PECO customers are still without power after Hurricane Sandy. They have already restored power to 650,000 customers. The hardest hit areas in the region were in Bucks County specifically Bristol, Middletown Township, Falls Township and Northampton Township and Montgomery County specifically Abington Township, Cheltenham Township, Upper Dublin and Springfield Township. Crews are also working in Philadelphia, Chester, and Delaware Counties. They have 3700 employees and contractors working repairing the damage with 2800 of them out in the field. Workers came from as far away as Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and PECO’s Chicago-based sister utility ComEd. They hope to get 90 percent of customers back online by Friday night, with the rest in the most damaged and isolated areas by early next week.
The Gloucester County prosecutor's office believes the accused killers of 12-year-old Clayton, NJ, girl, Autumn Pasquale, should be tried as adults. District Attorney Sean Dalton says "It is the state's position, based upon the gravity of the juveniles' actions in causing the death of Autumn Pasquale, that these cases should be heard in adult court." A motion to have the juveniles transferred will be filed within the next seven to ten days. Justin Robinson, 15, and Dante Robinson, 17, are being held on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of the body, tampering with evidence, and theft. The 15-year-old also is charged with luring. Autumn was reported missing on Oct 20 when she didn't return home. She was last seen leaving her home on her BMX bike. She apparently went to the Robinson's, lured there with the promise of trading bike parts. Hundreds participated in the search over the next few days. Her body was found in a recycling container blocks from her home.
Former Pennsylvania State University President Graham Spanier has now been charged in connection with the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly announced the charges today. Additional charges have also been filed against VP Gary Schultz and athletic director Timothy Curley. All three men now are charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, endangering the welfare of children, conspiracy, and failure to report suspected child abuse. Kelly called it a “conspiracy of silenceâ€. The three men apparently were well aware of incidents involving at least two of the victims, as evidenced by e-mail communication between the three of them. The first incident was in 1998 and the second was in 2001 witnessed by Mike McQueary. If those incidents were properly reported and not hidden it could have saved at least 5 of the victims that Sandusky was convicted of molesting this past summer. Curley, 58, and Schultz, 63, are expected to turn themselves in for rearraignment in a Dauphin County court Friday. Spanier, 64, is expected to turn himself in next Wednesday. Spanier was Penn State's president for 16 years. |
