NJ Gov Christie Tours Coastline, Barrier Islands Remain Closed, Philadelphia Recovering from Sandy

Governor Christie toured the New Jersey coastline by helicopter yesterday and said he never imagined he would see such devastation. Christie was emotional thinking about how much of his life was spent at the Jersey shore. Today, President Obama visits and Christie will ask for immediate help from the Army Corps of Engineers to begin rebuilding the beaches washed away by Hurricane Sandy, leaving towns with no protection.

Ocean City remains under a State of Emergency. Many roadways remain flooded or covered with sand and debris and many down wires. Access to Ocean City is restricted. Long Beach Island is likely to be inaccessible for 10 days where many roads remain flooded, even during low tide. On LBI, the National Guard is going door to door looking for people. In Seaside Heights, many remain without power or water. About 2 million people in New Jersey are still without power.

Philadelphia is getting back on its feet after a beating from Hurricane Sandy. Government offices are open, most schools reopened and for the most part, mass transit is back in service. Many suburban communities like Lower Merion Township, Upper Merion, Bucks County and others still have many roads closed as down trees and debris cleanup continues. More than a million people are still without power in the region.
