Hurricane Sandy Aftermath Cleanup, Corbett Assesses Polling Places, Obama Visits NJ

Now that the brunt of Sandy has passed, crews from Peco and the Philadelphia Streets Department are out trying to restore power and remove downed trees. Mayor Nutter said 340 trees were reported as coming down and Philadelphia fire and EMS personnel responded to 1,300 incidents Monday night alone. Government offices will be open today along with Philadelphia public, Catholic, and charter schools; students using yellow buses should expect delays. Parents needing information can go to the school district’s web site or call the district’s hotline at 215-400-4636. The mayor also said that trash and recycling collection resumes today. Monday or Tuesday collections should be held for one week. City officials also noted that a Philadelphia Fire Department search-and-rescue team has been deployed to New York as part of the federal response there. The city received and processed a record number of 911 calls during the storm and its aftermath. Police are now getting back to their normal, eight-hour shifts. Parking regulations will be in effect today in the City of Philadelphia.

Gov. Tom Corbett is taking steps to ensure that power outages caused by this week’s storm don’t interfere with next week’s voting for president and other major offices. He directed Secretary of State Carol Aichele to contact county election boards and assess the situation this week. Corbett says he hopes to have a full report by today or tomorrow so that the power companies can make sure all of the state’s polling places have electricity to run their electronic voting machines. In Lehigh County, elections chief clerk Tim Benyo says the battery life on their machines only lasts about two and a half hours. Benyo says if power isn’t back for the 151 polling places by Election Day, it’ll be a problem.

President Obama will travel to storm-stricken New Jersey today to view damage and thank first responders. He called the storm “heartbreaking for the nation.” The president offered his thoughts and prayers to those affected and told them “America is with you.” He said he also told government officials coordinating the response that there was “no excuse for inaction.”

Weather

A few showers this morning. Mostly cloudy this afternoon. High 52 in Philadelphia.
