Hurricane Sandy Aftermath, New Jersey Shoreline Battered, Philadelphia Survives

The devastation of Hurricane Sandy is being assessed today. At the Jersey shore, homes were moved off their foundations. Several came to rest in the middle of Route 35 outside of Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights. Atlantic City took a tremendous hit, losing much of the boardwalk, which the ocean sent crashing through homes and businesses. On Long Beach Island the surf overtook the dunes and the ocean met the bay. The Path transit system that serves Manhattan was flooded with sea water and will take more than a week to repair. Governor Christie believes it will take months to recover. Christie likens the recovery to post 9-11.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett assessed the damage from Hurricane Sandy, reporting two deaths and 1.3 million PA residents without power. So far, 1,700 National Guard troops have been deployed across the state. Utility crews from outside Pennsylvania are working to restore power. SEPTA and Amtrak rail service remain suspended today. Philadelphia International Airport is open, but most flights have been cancelled. Pennsylvania's major highways have re-opened however more than 400 roads are closed as a result of flooding rains and wind from the superstorm.

Hurricane Sandy has passed, leaving her historic mark on millions. Cleanup and restoration efforts are underway. PECO and the Streets Departments are making every effort to restore power and normalcy to the region. Philadelphia Mayor Nutter was relieved that there was only one minor injury reported as a result of the storm - a credit to the warning system, proper preparation and the cooperation of the citizens who live here.
