Hurricane Sandy Frankenstorm Landfall in New Jersey, State of Emergency Philadelphia, Power Outages

Hurricane Sandy, nicknamed Frankenstorm, is a Category 1 Hurricane and strengthening. Its maximum sustained winds are at 90 mph. Sandy is picking up speed, moving at 28 miles per hour and has the Jersey shore and Philadelphia in her crosshairs. The eye of the storm making landfall around 6 o'clock between Atlantic City and Cape May. Twenty foot waves are pounding the coastline. Record flooding is likely with an 8 foot storm surge combined with the full moon tonight, and heavy rains, and an 8 pm high tide tonight. Widespread flooding is reported at all shore towns with most of them under water right now. This storm is massive with tropical storm force winds spread out over 700 miles. The center of the storm will pass over the Philadelphia area overnight tonight and that is when the big damage will happen here. Heavy rain and strong winds through 6 am Tuesday. The rain and wind will not subside until sometime Wednesday.

Gov. Christie just announced that first responders will no longer be able to make rescues along the barrier islands until Tuesday morning. If you decided to stay, hunker down and move to higher ground in your residence. It is too dangerous for rescuers while the storm is making landfall. He admonished the Mayor of Atlantic City for letting people stay in shelters instead of insisting on evacuations, also in Brigantine where they stopped evacuations earlier on Monday.

Mayor Nutter has enacted a State of Emergency for Philadelphia through 5 p.m. Tuesday. All city offices and schools are closed Tuesday. Mayor Nutter encourages everyone to stay home and off the roads. That is, unless you live in a flood prone area. In that case, leave immediately and find friends, family, or a shelter for the duration of the storm. The Philadelphia Parking Authority has announced Free Parking in Philadelphia through Wednesday morning at all city meters. The Philadelphia International Airport is closed. All arrivals and departures are canceled. Amtrak has also canceled trains along the Northeast Corridor. Speed restrictions are in place for area highways as well as truck restrictions on DRPA bridges. If you need anything during the storm in Philadelphia use the 311 system to ask questions, report down trees and wires, clogged drains, etc. Use 911 only for emergency fire, police, and ambulance.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has issued a State of Disaster Emergency in Pennsylvania. PECO has upped their staff by hundreds getting ready to deal with massive power outages caused by high winds and falling trees. PPL, PSE&G, and Atlantic Electric have also brought in extra crews from all around the country to deal with the potential power disaster. The Red Cross is readying supplies, packing up water, cots, food, and shelter - enough to care for 26,000 people. President Obama has signed the State of Emergency declarations for Pennsylvania and New Jersey. FEMA is also readying their aid. They've classified Philadelphia as a Category 1 Hurricane zone.
