Hurricane Sandy Flooding, Wall Street and Transportation Closed, Worst Storm in a Generation

As predicted in all the storm tracking models, Hurricane Sandy has made a hard left turn and is now headed straight for us. Sandy extends hundreds of miles in all directions and is shaping up to be the worst storm any of us have ever seen. The storm is strengthening and packs hurricane force winds up to 175 miles from the storm center. The eye of the storm will make landfall tonight at the Jersey Shore. Conditions will only worsen through tonight and Tuesday with 75 mile per hour winds and flood warnings throughout the entire Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware and Lehigh Valley areas.

Ten foot waves are pounding the beaches at the Jersey shore. Witnesses along the Jersey shore are reporting they have never seen the Atlantic Ocean more angry and churned up than it is today. And it's going to get much worse. At high tide around eight o'clock this morning the waves breached the dunes in Atlantic City and flooded the streets. In Ocean City, New Jersey this morning the ocean met the bay on Bay Avenue during high tide. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for just about all towns along the Jersey shore. High tide at 8 pm tonight will be much worse because it coincides with Sandy's landfall, a diirect hit on New Jersey's shorline. Massive flooding at the shore is very likely.

Hurricane Sandy has taken control of transportation, commerce, and most of our lives. Wall Street has closed as New York prepares for record flooding. SEPTA has suspended all services in Philadelphia today. No trains, busses, subways or trolleys are operating today and will remain suspended until further notice. Amtrak has cancelled its service on the Northeast Corridor. Philadelphia International Airport is closed and Mayor Nutter has declared that the City of Philadelphia is closed. Governor Corbett has declared a state of emergency and President Obama has authorized federal aid for the region.

UPDATE: Wall Street will be closed again on Tuesday and maybe Wednesday. The trading floor of the NYSE is flooded with more than three feet of water.

Heavy rain and 40 mile per hour winds this afternoon and conditions will get worse tonight. 57 in Philadelphia.
