Montco Bus Explosion Training, Phoenixville Schools Halloween-less, Baby Abduction in PA Amber Alert

An extensive training session in Montgomery County yesterday brought a number of law enforcement agencies together to learn how to secure and process a scene after thereâ€™s been an explosion. The training exercise consisted of blowing up a mass transit bus which contained artifacts from both the "victims" and the "perpetrator" â€” items such as cell phones, keys, wallets and wedding rings. The goal of participants was to collect as much as they could from the debris field, identify the people inside, and prepare the scene for prosecution if it was a criminal act.

Phoenixville School District officials sent a letter home to parents on Monday, reminding them there wonâ€™t be a Halloween celebration at the Elementary Schools this year, a decision they said was sent out in the â€œWelcome Backâ€ letter in August. Superintendent Alan Fegley said there were a number of factors considered when making the decision, including that the elementary schools were all doing different celebrations and the school wanted to keep them consistent, that costume safety was becoming a real concern, students who couldnâ€™t afford costumes were feeling left out, and that the absentee rate more than doubled â€” from 4% to 9% on Halloween.

Fegley says they will have a fall festival, complete with parties for the kids. In Mondayâ€™s letter, the superintendent also said, â€œWe understand that not everyone will agree with this decision. We hope you will realize it was made with the best interests of ALL our students in mind.â€

State police have issued an Amber Alert for a baby abducted after her grandmother was murdered in Upper Merion Township Monday. 10-month-old Saavni Venna was last seen between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Marquis Apartments at 251 West Dekalb Pike in King of Prussia. Saavni is described as an Asian-Indian female, weighing 21 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes and was wearing a white dress with pink flowers. Police say she was abducted by an unknown suspect. The suspect and vehicle information are unknown at this time.
