Wilmington Child Hit By Car, SEPTA Injury Fraud, Michael Vick a Dog Owner

A child was rushed to DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington after being struck by a car on Thursday.
The two year old child left his home in attempt to follow his father to the store.
The boy was struck by a westbound 1997 Buick Century operated by a 52-year-old Wilmington man who did remain at the scene and cooperate with police.
There is no word on the child’s condition.

Eight people are charged with faking injuries on a SEPTA bus back in 2009.
A Loomis armored car had clipped the left mirror of the SEPTA bus.
The value of their combined medical bills was said to be about $80,000.
Of the eight defendants, only two were actually aboard the bus at the time of the incident. Another defendant, Eric Lovett, can be seen on video outside the bus requesting a “witness card” from the driver. Lovett then allegedly enlisted the other five defendants, who he found on the street or in his neighborhood around the time of the incident, and convinced them to file the claims. Surveillance video also confirmed that the two defendants who were on the bus were not injured as they’d claimed.
Roughly 5,000 claims are filed against SEPTA every year. Of those, more than a hundred are turned over to police as suspected fraud. Claims cost SEPTA roughly $40 million dollars a year.
Forty eight-year-old Kitt Smith of the 1500 block of S. Stillman Street, 56-year-old Avis Jackson of 1200 block of S. 31st Street, 21-year-old Malik Spivey of 900 block of W. Champlost Ave, 46-year-old Eric Lovett of 2200 block of N. 17th Street and 36-year-old Stephanie Williams of 2200 block of N. 17th Street were all arrested and charged with Criminal Conspiracy, Attempted Theft by Deception and Insurance Fraud. Forty five-year-old Lorraine Huff of 3300 block of B. Street, 46-year-old Faith Rowley of 1200 block of S. 31st Street, 55-year old Arthur Whaley of 1300 block of Wells Street are also facing additional charges of Perjury and Unsworn Falsification for the incident that happened in December 2009 on the SEPTA Route 21 bus.
All eight defendants are scheduled to appear in court on October 15, 2012.

Michael Vick is a dog owner again.
Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges, confirmed Thursday that his family has a dog. The Philadelphia Eagles’ four-time Pro Bowl quarterback refused to discuss the topic just a day earlier.
“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family.”
Since his release from prison in 2009, Vick has worked with The Humane Society of the United States to speak out against animal cruelty. He’s made appearances at schools and spoken to students about the dangers of being involved in dogfighting. Vick says that commitment will continue.
“This is an opportunity to break the cycle,” Vick said. “To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”
Vick was banned from owning a dog until completing his probation period. When he first stated his desire to own one, it touched off a firestorm. Some animal rights activists were outraged along with fans who thought the star player should never be allowed to have a dog.
“I’m not a psychopath. I’m not crazy. I’m a human being,” Vick once told The Associated Press about wanting to own a dog. “What happened in my past and what I did in the culture I grew up in doesn’t shape and mold me as the person I am now.”
