Pawlucy Returns to School/Teacher Reads Letter to Students; PECO Resuming Smart Meter Installations

The teenage girl who was mocked and ridiculed in front class by her geometry teacher for wearing a Romney-Ryan t-shirt returned to Charles Carol High School today. A rally showing support for Samantha Pawlucy took place outside the school around 7:45 with singing of the National Anthem and readings from the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Many of the 2 dozen or so participants were veterans. Later in the day at a brief assembly, the teacher, Lynette Gaymon, returned to read a short letter to the students. She offered regret that the situation blew up into such a conflict over what she â€œmeant as a light and humorous remarkâ€. Ms. Gaymon implored that all the harassment and hateful words toward Pawlucy needs to stop. Gaymon also affirmed everyone's right to free speech and entitlement of opinion, but that differences should not breed hate and disagreement, but rather discussion. Gaymon will return to school when she feels safe and unthreatened.

PECO will continue the installation of electronic smart-meters. They suspended the installation program back in August after several of the new devices caught fire due to overheating and sparking. Many tests were done and PECO decided to replace all the meters manufactured by Sensus Metering Systems Inc. of Raleigh, N.C., with those made by a Swiss vendor, Landis & Gyr AG. Installers will continue to swap out the remaining 96,000 meters of the old type and move ahead with the project. The smart-meters offer 2-way wireless communication back to the utility company for instant feedback and better management of the power grid. Customers can also take advantage of off-peak hour rates.

Jerry Sandusky was sentenced today, four months after being found guilty on 45 counts in the devastating child sex abuse case. Sandusky spoke at the hearing this morning, and continued to profess his innocence and was unapologetic and in denial of any actions of which he was convicted. Sandusky was sentenced to 30-60 years in prison, which is effectively a life term for the 68-year-old. He also has to pay prosecution fees and $1,700 to the state victim compensation fund. He will now head to Camp Hill prison for classification before being assigned to a more permanent state prison.
