Wedding Brawl at Sheraton Society Hill Video, 1 Dead; Temple Football Player Arrested

A man died last night after suffering a heart attack at the Sheraton in Society Hill on Second and Walnut. The 57-year-old guest was found unconscious around 2:15 am outside of a wedding at the hotel and taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:51 am. He was reported to be the uncle of the bride. That turn of events would be tragic enough. If only it were that simple. The discovery was made after a large scale brawl broke out at the end of this wedding in the early morning hours on Sunday that involved guests fighting with at least seven police officers and members of another wedding party. The police were using batons, women were screaming, the scene was absolutely chaotic. It looks like a raid on a 1920's illegal cabaret from the movies. Portions of the brawl were captured by another hotel guest and posted on YouTube. Two men were issued citations for disorderly conduct while one man was arrested for assaulting a police officer, with more arrests possible. Arguments in the hotel bar escalated into the fracas between members of the same wedding party as well as between members from another separate party. Officers struggled to separate and subdue the rowdy guests, resorting to batons and even a tazer. Investigation to the cause of the disagreements are still on going.

The arrested man has been identified as Matthew Sofka, 26, of Westfield, N.J. He has been charged with assault on police, inciting a riot and related offenses. In the video a police officer can be seen hitting Sofka with a baton, he was then tasered off camera to be taken under control.

Temple Football player, redshirt junior defensive tackle Kamal Johnson, is facing some serious allegations from his girlfriend, also a Temple student. He allegedly dragged her through the hallway and down the stairs from her apartment to his, punched her, and held her against her will for three hours all because he thought she was cheating on him. Johnson turned himself in on Thursday. He was arraigned early Saturday on felony kidnapping and misdemeanor charges including unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault. Bail was set at $25,000. A preliminary hearing will be held on Oct. 23. It would be up to Temple coach Steve Addazio if Johnson would be suspended from the team.
