Chase Utley Will Not Play Third Base This Year; Experiment Has Been Put On Hold

Chase Utley will not be playing third base this year. The Phillies were contemplating using these last few games to experiment with the All-Star second basemen by switching defensive positions to third base, but have decided to put that idea on hold.

Last month, Utley brought up the possibility to management that he could play on the other side of the diamond. He began to take ground balls over on the corner, working with infield coach Sam Perlozzo, and seemed to be doing well. The thinking behind the whole scheme being the Phillies are going to be in need of a third basemen next year and a switch to that side might help Utley's chronic knee problems.

However, before this whole experiment went any further they've decided to shut it down. “After further review, we think this makes sense,” Amaro said. “He’s doing well over there. But in retrospect, we think it would be difficult to make an assessment on watching him play six games. We’re not good enough scouts to make an assessment on six games.” They didn't rule out re-visiting the possibility at a later date.

Utley did play third in 2002 in AAA ball but it didn't quite work out. Right now the Phillies in house options will be Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen at spring training, but Amaro will undoubtedly be looking across the league during the off season.
