Mayor Nutter Goes to DNC, Cost $10000; Secret Service Follow Threat; Philly Schools No Longer Danger

Mayor Michael Nutter is in Charlotte, NC, for the Democratic National Convention. Nutter, who is the President of the United States Conference of Mayors, is just one of a many US mayors in attendance. He is expected to take the podium Thursday night. The mayor is paying for his trip using his campaign funds, however, 5 staff members (3 police security officers and 2 personal aides) are being sent along at the expense of the Philadelphia taxpayers. The estimated cost is $10,000. NJ Governor Chris Christie's trip to the Republican National Convention in Tampa last week was paid for by the Republican Governors Association. His taxpayer paid state police security detail travels with him everywhere he goes regardless of the business. His aides had to take personal vacation time.

The Secret Service and Philadelphia Police are currently investigating a threat made against President Obama. Officials say that a 911 call was placed threatening the President on Tuesday night at around 11:50pm. They have traced the location of call back to a pay phone on the 100 block of East Cumberland Street in Kensignton. The Secret Service is taking the threat seriously and doing a full investigation. They have not released the exact content of the threat, just that it “was threatening towards the President”.

No school should want to be labeled as “persistently dangerous”. That dubious title was dropped from six Philadelphia schools and two “Renaissance” charters when they were removed from this year's state list. Two schools were added to the list, however, leaving a total of six Philadelphia school district schools still labeled “persistently dangerous.” Renaissance Charter school Mastery Gratz High was one of those removed. The charter school took a serious approach at changing the culture and focusing on becoming nonviolent.
