Hundreds Mourn Officer Walker, Nutter Angry; Festival Prep Continues; Sweet Caroline Dumped at PSU

Hundreds honored Police Officer Moses Walker Jr. today and yesterday during memorial services for the slain policeman at Deliverance Evangelistic Church in North Philadelphia. Yesterday a horse-drawn procession led his body to the church so that mourners from across the city could pay solemn respects. That viewing continued this morning before the funeral and a packed church that included Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Walker's fellow officers from the 22nd District. Mayor Nutter showed his anger at the insistent violence that plagues the city. He lashed out, â€œStop this violence, stop these killings, stop this insanity.â€ Walker was gunned down August 18th in a botched robbery caught on tape while walking to the bus after his late night shift. The two suspects are in custody.

Preparations for this weekend's â€œMade in Americaâ€ festival on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway continue as stages are erected on the site between the Art Museum steps and 22nd street. The main stage at the Art Museum is larger than the one typically installed for the 4th of July shows. It's made to handle the additional lights and sound for the mainstream acts booked for the weekend. They are also building 3 other stages, one of which will be inside a tent. Crucial to the ticketed event are the two 8 foot fences that will circle the entire area to keep gate crashers out. The stages will be done soon, but lights and sound won't go up until the day of the show. There will be just as many people attending this concert as Bruce Springsteen's two shows at Citizen's Bank Park, but more attention is being brought to Jay-Z's festival, primarily because of it's location and ticketed nature. They had to create the venue from nothing. There of course will be road closures and traffic problems on the holiday weekend. Penn State has taken the opportunity to make changes to their football program in light of the events of the past year. A few of the obvious changes include a brand new head coach Bill O'Brien and the players' names on the back of their jerseys. Now something that would probably have gone unnoticed unless someone said something, but the stadium's mix of music will not feature Neil Diamond's â€œSweet Carolineâ€ this year. A signature song at Pitt or Red Sox games, but familiar at PSU, the sing-a-long is always a crowd pleaser. The lyrics â€œHands, touching hands, reaching out, touching me, touching youâ€ probably wouldn't go over well being chanted in State College anymore.
