Philadelphia Archdiocese Selling Beach House, Ocean City Beaches Closed, Pennsylvania Tequila Recall

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is set to auction off its large beachfront property in Ventnor, NJ to help payoff some of a $17 million deficit. The 11-bedroom, 10,000 sq-ft Villa St. Joseph retreat has been a respite for priests for 50 years, but the $115,000 a year in property taxes combined with $10 million in legal fees spent by the Archdiocese in the past two years on a criminal trial and lawsuits has forced Archbishop Chaput's hand to sell. The property, which spans an entire block, is assessed at $6.3 million. It will go to auction September 15th.

Some Ocean City, NJ beaches were closed for bathing/swimming today as a precaution after a sewage leak may have caused some material to leak into the storm sewers and out to the water. Officials took water samples for testing. Those beaches may be open on Tuesday pending results. Here is the statement from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection: â€œStenton Avenue through 3rd Avenue beaches in Ocean City are closed today as a precaution due to a sewage spill to a nearby storm drain. Water quality samples have been collected at all affected beaches this morning. The beaches will remain closed pending water quality results.â€ Those beaches were at the Northern end of the Boardwalk. The Pennsylvania Liqour Control Board have issued a voluntary recall on certain types of tequila because glass particles may be inside the bottles. There haven't been any reports of injuries. The PLCB said Friday the recall involves the 1800 Tequila brand, particularly the 1.75-liter Silver, Reposado and Coconut varieties. They said the bottles' glass stoppers may have been damaged during transportation and handling. Only a small number of bottles may have been affected but customers shouldn't drink the tequila just in case, but rather bring the bottle to a state liquor store for a refund.
