Phillies' consecutive sellout streak comes to an end; Braves win 6-1

Tonight's Phillies' home game at Citizens' Bank Park vs. the Braves drew an announced paid attendance of 41,655. That was the lowest attendance at a Phillies' game since they beat the Cincinnati Reds 22-1 back on July 6, 2009. That game drew 41,548.

Tonight's dip is historically significant because for each of the 257 regular season games in-between, the games have been 'sold-out'. For CBP, the Phillies count anything over 43,300 as a sellout crowd. The streak is the longest in NL history and the third longest ever. Over the course of the past three years 11,585,952 fans bought tickets and came through the turnstiles to fill the stands, seats, boxes, Ashburn Alley, and any standing room they could find. In fact that number equates to 45,082 tickets sold per game during the streak, averaging over capacity. If you can include the playoffs over the past few years the streak is actually 273.

The Phillies have had a very tough year all around. Even before the recent personnel changes, the streak looked like it was in danger of falling. A few bare patches of seats could be seen popping up here and there. All it would take is a few combining circumstances to keep away the last minute walk up crowd that pushes sales on game day. Tonight was perfect for it, a Monday night, without a marquee pitching matchup, Olympics heating up on TV, mid-August vacation time. It was just enough to keep home that extra 2,000 people.

The Phillies still have the largest home crowd in all of baseball this year at 44,606 per game. As Philly fans we are loyal to our teams and support them with all we have, but we do demand a lot from them when we are showing up. This year has been tough for baseball, but only because of our expectations from the past few years. Tonight's 41,655 is hardly a small crowd, but does show a bit of our restlessness. We want to win and to see a winning team playing hard on the field. That place will be packed to the gills every night for that. With a payroll like the current team, they are going to need to keep selling tickets.
