Atlantic City Electric Powerless Customers, PA Red Light Cameras, Philadelphia School Superintendent

Utility crews were working feverishly to restore electrical service to thousands of customers in southern New Jersey who were still without power late Sunday afternoon, one day after severe thunderstorms socked the region. Officials say it will likely take "several days" before service is fully restored. Atlantic City Electric said about 206,000 customers lost power at the peak of the storms, which hit early Saturday morning. And nearly 122,000 still had no power as of 7 p.m. Sunday. Residents can call 1-866-704-4636 for all status updates.

A bill to expand the use of red light cameras to catch traffic violators in Pennsylvania is on its way to the governor’s desk to be signed into law. The state House of Representatives joined the Senate in approving the measure early Sunday, as lawmakers stayed past their usual 11 p.m. deadline to finish voting on non-budget matters. The measure would extend the use of automated cameras in Philadelphia through 2017. It also would allow the devices in Pittsburgh and suburban Philadelphia municipalities with at least 20,000 residents and accredited police departments. The programs would be subject to approval by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The bill also would require people younger than 18 to complete a PennDOT-approved safety course before they can obtain a junior license to operate motorcycles.

Philadelphia’s incoming schools superintendent would like to start his new job sooner, rather than later. Dr. William Hite, the superintendent in Prince George’s County, Maryland, has a contract clause requiring him to give 120 days notice to get severance. Hite says talks are underway to resolve that. When Hite does arrive, he’ll be taking the helm of a district that has to borrow $218 million and likely make about $50 million more in program cuts, just to break even.
