DRPA Changes Rules for Senior Discount; Head of PHA leaves Unexpectedly; Phils Lose, Lee winless

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) has changed the rules regarding the 50% senior discount on it's 4 area bridges. DRPA operates the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross, and Commodore Barry Bridges over the Delaware River. Senior Citizens 65 and older who want the discount must now send DRPA a copy of their driver's license and vehicle registration along with their E-ZPass transponder number. They must submit this information every year to ensure that the Senior Citizen is still driving that car and has a valid license so only those entitled to the benefit are getting it. In the past people would take transponders from cars or drivers who no longer drove and exploit the system. DRPA is informing all those currently enrolled about the change, they have until September 1st to send in the information.

The paperwork can be mailed to DRPA Revenue Operations, Box 1949, Camden, N.J. 08101, faxed to 856-969-7848, or scanned and e-mailed to seniordiscount@drpa.org. For more information, go to www.drpa.org/pdfs/SeniorEZPass.pdf or call 856-968-3348 or 856-968-3349.

Head of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, Michael P. Kelly, suddenly resigned Friday. Kelly did not give much explanation for his abrupt resignation, "It's for personal reasons,... I can tell you there will be news very soon to explain this." The PHA board of directors was replaced last year by a single representative in Karen Newton-Cole of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development after the turmoil surrounding Kelly's predessor Carl R. Greene and sexual harassment claims. Kelly said he was “incredibly thankful” and plans to go back to Washington. Mayor Nutter and others praised his works at PHA in stabilizing the agency and turning around. Kelvin Jeremiah, PHA's current director of audit and compliance, will step into Kelly's role.
