Philadelphia Police are searching for a suspect who shot and killed the store manager of a Dunkin' Donuts store in North Philadelphia during an armed robbery early Saturday morning, 6/5. The incident was caught on store surveillance video. It happened at 5:23 a.m. at the Dunkin' store on the 500 block of W. Lehigh Avenue in the Fairhill neighborhood. 40-year-old Christine Lugo, the store's manager, was opening up at the front door for the morning when she was approaching by a man. The suspect forced her into the store at gunpoint and into a back room. Lugo seemed to be cooperating with the man. She handed over cash from some register drawers. The suspect shot her in the head anyway and fled. He is described as a Black male, late 30's to early 40's, medium complexion, mustache and goatee, medium-to-stocky build, blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt, gray cargo sweatpants, light gray New Balance sneakers, analog watch on right wrist, blue gloves and blue "Covid" mask. There is a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case. If you have any information, contact 215.686.TIPS (8477). Lugo was a mother and a grandmother.
Catholic bishops in New Jersey say that it is time to go back to Mass in person. A special dispensation lifting the requirement to attend weekly Mass was put into place at the beginning of the pandemic. Many parishes began to live stream services so that parishioners could watch Mass from home. Bishops in the Garden State have now lifted that special dispensation. "At this time, due to the observance of public safety protocols and the increase in the availability of vaccines, we have begun a return to some sense of normalcy in various sectors of our society," according a statement signed by Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the head of the Archdiocese of Newark, and the bishops of the dioceses of Trenton, Metuchen, Passaic and Camden. "This obligation does not apply to those who are ill; those who have reason to believe that they were recently exposed to the coronavirus or another serious or contagious illness; those who are confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility; or those with serious underlying health conditions," the statement said. There may still be restrictions in individual dioceses and churches. In Delaware, the dispensation will be lifted June 26. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has not said when faithful may be required to return to Mass.
A restaurant owner died after being punched in the head during a road rage incident following a minor car accident last month in Philadelphia's Juniata neighborhood. It happened on May 24 at L and Luzerne Street. One of the restaurant's delivery drivers had gotten into a accident while out on a delivery. 28-year-old Wei Lin went to the scene to translate for the driver who does not speak english. While they were exchanging information with the female driver of the other car, the passenger of the other vehicle got out and punched Lin in the head. Lin fell to the ground unconscious. He was taken to the Temple University Hospital where he died three days later. The suspect, Jose Figueroa of Hunting Park, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. The incident is not being investigated as a hate crime because no racial slurs were used before/during the attack.
