Metro PCS Clerk Killed in DE; I95 Reopens After FDR Skate Park Fire; Penn State Changes Gender Terms

New Castle County and Elsmere Police are investigating after a female clerk was found dead inside a Metro by T-Moble store on Saturday afternoon, 5/15. It happened just after 5 p.m. at the Metro PCS store on the 900 block of Kirkwood Highway in Elsmere, DE. Police were called when the store was found unoccupied with the register open. Police discovered the women in the basement shot to death. This store had been robbed three other times in the past two years. The victim had been working each time. I-95 in South Philadelphia was closed in both directions early Sunday morning, 5/16, after a fire broke out at the skate park beneath the highway at FDR Park. Firefighters were called out around 2:30 a.m. A wooden half pipe was on fire. Pennsylvania State Police decided to shutdown the Girard Point Bridge. I-95 was closed between Exit 19 and Exit 17 southbound and Exit 12 and Exit 17 northbound. After the fire was extinguished, engineers came out to inspect the roadway for any structural damage. The southbound lanes reopened just before 7:30 a.m. The northbound lanes reopened shortly after 11:00 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Penn State faculty has voted on a proposition that would remove gendered and binary terms from their course and program descriptions. They also recommend changing many current and traditional terms used to describe class years. The proposition was approved on April 27. "The University, as with most all academic institutions world-wide, has grown out of a typically male-centered world. As such, many terms in our lexicon carry a strong, male-centric, binary character to them. Terms such as 'freshmen' are decidedly male-specific, while terms such as 'upperclassmen' can be interpreted as both sexist and classist. Terms such as 'junior' and 'senior' are parallel to western male father-son naming conventions, and much of our written documentation uses he/she pronouns." Instead of using freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior Penn State will now use 1st Year, 2nd Year, 3rd Year, and 4th Year. 5th Year students will not be called 'super seniors.' Gendered pronouns he/him/his and she/her/hers will be replaced with they/them/theirs in course descriptions.
