PA Move Over Law Goes Into Effect 4/27; Woman Killed Outside Delaware School; REAL ID Pushed Back

Pennsylvania's 'Move Over' law goes into effect Tuesday, April 27. Motorists are now required to move over to the left-most lane or slow down when passing a vehicle stopped on the side of the road. This includes EMS, police, fire, tow trucks, construction crews, and others with flashing lights, plus regular disabled vehicles that have the proper indicators. If you can't move over to the left, or it is just a single lane roadway, you have to slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. A first offense is $500. A second offense is $1,000. A third offense is $2,000, plus a 90-day license suspension. There is a $10,000 fine if you injure or kill someone. You will also receive 2 points on your license for each offense.

Police in Delaware are investigating after a woman was shot and killed outside a middle school in Smyrna on Tuesday morning, 4/27. It happened around 10:15 a.m. in the front parking lot of Smyrna Middle School along Duck Creek Parkway. The 38-year-old woman and 47-year-old man had a verbal argument before shots were fired. Police said the two were related somehow. The suspect was captured after a police chase that led in to Maryland. He crashed his car into a tree and had to be airlifted to an area hospital. Authorities say that the shooting was domestic related. No students or staff were involved, but the school was placed on lockdown following the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

The Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday, 4/27, that the deadline for travelers to have a REAL ID has been pushed back again due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The new date will now be May 3, 2023. The pandemic already pushed the deadline back from October 2020 to October 1, 2021. Real ID's will be needed to board a commercial flight and enter certain federal buildings. A regular state identification will still be sufficient for driving, cashing checks, buying alcohol, etc. You can use a passport or other federal/military ID instead of a REAL ID. REAL ID's are more secure and require you to present more identification such as birth certificate and proof of residency when applying.

"Extending the REAL ID full enforcement deadline will give states needed time to reopen their driver's licensing operations and ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card," Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in a news release.
