CDC Updates Guidance to 3-feet in School; Pottstown Transformer Explosions; Montco 12yo Shot at Home

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is updating its social distancing guidance for schools. It is now saying that students can sit 3 feet apart while in classrooms, instead of 6 feet as previously recommended. It points to new studies out Friday, 3/19, that found there was little difference in transmission levels between sitting 6 feet apart or 3 feet apart. You still need to continue to wear masks and wash hands, etc. Six feet is still recommended in common areas. These changes could make it easier to get children back into classrooms.

Residents of a Montgomery County town were told to shelter in place on Friday morning, 3/19, after an underground transformer fire was causing explosions. The Norco Fire Company responded to the area of Hanover and High streets around 3:30 a.m. for reports of smoke. Crews discovered an underground fire. Due to the danger posed by the explosions, a one mile radius around the intersection was closed. PECO says that a few hundred customers are without power.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and Upper Providence Police say that a 12-year-old girl was found shot to death inside her home on Friday morning, 3/19. Officers responded just before 8 a.m. to reports of a shooting at a townhouse on Larchwood Court in the Perkiomen Woods community in Upper Providence near Collegeville. The girl was found in the living suffering from a single gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A weapon was recovered. Family members were present at the time. The girl's identity has not been released. The circumstances surrounded the shooting are still under investigation.

UPDATE: Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele says that 12-year-old Jasiyah Vasquez was shot and killed by her brother 13-year-old Jah'sir Vasquez. Jah'sir is being charged as an adult with third degree murder. The shooting was captured on surveillance camera. "We followed the evidence in this case, which clearly showed that the 13-year-old shot and killed his sister. Despite the child's age, Pennsylvania law requires that we charge Jah'sir Vasquez in adult criminal court for the shooting death of his sister," Steele said in a statement. The children's mother, Daisy Vasquez, had asked Jah'sir to bring her 9mm handgun in from her car. The boy entered "the house with the handgun in his right hand and then pointing it at Jasiyah. Seconds later, while Jah'sir had the gun pointed in his sister's direction, it discharged, and Jasiyah collapsed."
