PA Lt. Gov. John Fetterman Running for Senate; Couple Shot Dead, 5yo Unhurt; Philly Teachers Protest

Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman officially announced that he is running for U.S. Senate in PA in 2022. He had filed the required paperwork last week. The Democrat will most likely face a crowded field for the primary next year with possible opponents such as Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, state Sen. Sharif Street, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, and US Rep. Chrissy Houlahan. Republican Senator Pat Toomey previously announced that he would not seek reelection. This has left the race wide open for both parties. Before serving as Lt. Gov., Fetterman was Mayor of Braddock which is just east of Pittsburgh.

"I'm running for the United States Senate for the same reason I ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2018 and Mayor of Braddock 16 years ago, because I believe in a set of core truths. I believe in the dignity of work and the dignity of a paycheck," Fetterman said in a statement.

"I believe the union way of life is sacred. I believe in healthcare as a fundamental, basic human right. I believe in environmental justice, I believe our criminal justice system needs a significant overhaul. I believe that the war on drugs needs to stop and we need to legalize marijuana across this country. I believe that the LGBTQIA community deserves the same rights and protections that the rest of us enjoy in this country."

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man and a women were shot dead in their bedroom while their 5-year-old child was left untouched in the bed early Monday morning. Police responded just before 1 a.m. to the 500 block of Hill Creek Drive in Lawncrest. Officers found the 24-year-old couple shot dead in the bedroom. A 5-year-old child was found physically unharmed lying in the bed next to the deceased man. "In the room where the two victims were shot and killed, there was a 5-year-old child in bed with the deceased male," Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said. "And that 5-year-old child, fortunately, very luckily, was not injured at all." Investigators believe the suspect may have gotten through a first floor window. The child is now with family. There have been no arrests and the motive is not yet known.

Philadelphia teachers demonstrated on Monday, 2/8, for the safe reopening of city schools. The school district had ordered around 2,000 PreK-2 teachers to report to their school buildings today to prepare for students to return on February 22. Jerry Jordan, the president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, e-mailed teachers on Friday, 2/5, saying they "should not go into buildings on Monday, but should continue to work... I believe that you can do your job remotely." He cited concerns over building safety and ventilation. Some teachers even worked from the sidewalks in the freezing temperatures, bringing their laptops to the demonstration. Teachers who did not report to their school on Monday will not face disciplinary action. A third-party mediator has been called in to determine if buildings are safe enough for teachers and students to return. Parents and community members joined the demonstrations.
