| Temple U. Settles US News Rankings Case; 6 Month Restaurant Eviction Moratorium; $8M in Arts Funding |

Temple University has settled with the U.S. Department of Education for $700,000 after it was accused of submitting falsified information to U.S. News & World Report to boost the rankings of the Fox School of Business and Management’s online MBA program. In the agreement, Temple admits no wrongdoing over the allegations and is absolved from any future civil suits from the education department. The university is accused of sending inaccurate data between 2014 and 2018. The university says it has taken "broad-sweeping corrective measures" to fix their reporting process. "We know many students rely on rankings to make decisions, and in this case students were presented deliberately falsified information by Temple's Fox School," education department Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement. Fox School's online MBA was ranked #1 during the period of alleged misconduct. It is now ranked #88. The university also reached a $5.4 million settlement in a class action lawsuit in 2018.
Philadelphia City Council passed a bill on Thursday, December 3, that enacts a 180-day moratorium on evictions of restaurants in the city. It applies to non-chain restaurants with fewer than 100 employees. Restaurants seeking protection also have to prove they lost 50% of their revenue due to COVID-19 restrictions. In Philadelphia, indoor dining has been suspended through at least the New Year. Outdoor dining is allowed with restrictions, but the winter weather will most likely dissuade diners. City Councilmember Bobby Henon, the bill's sponsor, said, "While this legislation won't solve every problem facing restaurants and catering facilities, it's a measure that will provide some relief and ensure that our commercial corridors remain intact temporarily." Mayor Jim Kenney is expected to sign the bill.
The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has hit the arts and culture sector the hardest, completely shutting most of it down since last March. Not being able to open doors to crowds for performances or exhibitions has been a huge set back to revenue. These will be the last places to reopen on the other side after we are eventually able to pull out of the emergency. The Andrew W. Mellon and William Penn Foundations have selected 37 institutions in Philadelphia to split an $8 million fund. They mainly fall into the fine arts and theater categories. "Nearly nine months into the pandemic, arts and culture organizations in this great city of Philadelphia, and around the country, are still grappling with extreme financial challenges," said Elizabeth Alexander, president of the Mellon Foundation. "We hope these grants not only help these organizations navigate the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, but also galvanize other funders to support the visionary artists and cultural leaders who are helping to illuminate our path forward from this prolonged global emergency." Supporting these institutions also supports the numerous jobs associated with each.
Independent venues also need help to survive. In Philadelphia, those include places like World Cafe Live, Union Transfer, Johnny Brendas, Milkboy, etc. They too have been closed without events since March. There is legislation at the state and federal level that will hopefully save these venues until live music can return. Let your representative know.
