Mayor Kenny Declines Brunch at Protest Camp; Lancaster Shooting Protest; Man Shot in Lower Merion

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney 'respectfully declined' an invitation to brunch and have conversation with protestors at the encampment along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Monday morning, 9/14. Last week, the city's 'third and final' notice of eviction deadline came and passed without much movement on either side. Protestors invited Mayor Kenney to come to the camps to talk. The invitation was displayed on a bed sheet. It read, "Dear Mayor Kenney: You're cordially invited to brunch & conversation @ campjtd on Monday 9/14 @ 11 am [@12pm @ campteddy] No Violence No Barricades All Solution RSVP Regrets Only." CampJTD is the main camp located on the Parkway. Camp Teddy is located next to the PHA headquarters on Ridge Ave.

The mayor's office released this statement on Monday morning, 9/14: "The mayor respectfully declines the invitation. He met face-to-face with the group in good faith on several occasions and does not feel another meeting - with media present - is appropriate at this time. He also believes another meeting would be unproductive, as past meetings have been. Camp leaders could not agree on their demands, which repeatedly changed, and were in many cases out of the City's control."

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Lancaster after a man was shot and killed by a police officer on Sunday afternoon, 9/13. The incident was caught on the officer's body cam. 27-year-old Ricardo Munoz was shot while holding a knife and chasing after an officer responding to a domestic disturbance. The officer has been placed on administrative leave and the incident is being investigated by the Lancaster County District Attorney's office. Large protest crowds gathered outside the police station Sunday night. The unrest grew violent as several buildings and vehicles were damaged, fires were lit, and objects thrown at police. Eventually police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Police say they gave several warnings and that the crowd "failed to follow the instructions." Eight people were arrested.

Authorities in Lower Merion, Montgomery County are investigating a homicide late Sunday night, 9/13. It happened around 10:45 p.m. on the on the 1400 block of Surrey Lane in the Wynnewood section about a block from Haverford Road and City Ave. A man was found on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gun shot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. A K9 from Radnor police and a helicopter from Philadelphia police were brought in to search the area for a possible gunman. The identify of the victim has not been released. Montgomery County Detectives and Lower Merion Police are both investigating. UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Nahray Crisden of Overbrook in Philadelphia. Crisden had been a football and track star at West Philadelphia High School.
