Philadelphia Catholic League Cancels Fall Sports; Major Zoom Outage; Church Attack Woman in Custody

The Philadelphia Catholic League has decided not to hold a Fall Sports season for 2020. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia made the announcement on Monday, 8/24. This affects the 17 Archdiocesan high schools in the Greater Philadelphia area. La Salle and St. Joe's Prep compete in the Catholic League, but are not Archdiocesan schools. They are still considering competing as independents in football.

"After much careful thought, consultation, and prayer a decision has been reached that all of our high schools will opt out of participation in interscholastic competition for the fall 2020 season," a spokesperson wrote. "We recognize that this news is disappointing to many of our students, families and coaches, particularly our seniors. It saddens us greatly as well. We recognize the value of athletics as part of our educational philosophy that seeks to provide for the holistic formation of young men and women of character. This is not the scenario any of us desired."

"We are confident that PIAA will seek to provide alternative solutions for those entities opting out of fall programs in the coming semester. The pandemic has made every aspect of life unpredictable for all of us over the past several months. As we continue to live in a time of uncertainty, it would be imprudent to speculate regarding an exact time when competitions will resume or regarding the status of spring semester athletics. In keeping with our commitment, we will share timely information with you about developments and decisions affecting our schools," added the Archdioceses of Philadelphia.

Many area colleges and school districts started the 2020-21 academic year today. This is an early start for many schools due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Many schools are also either conducting classes entirely online or with a hybrid model with some in-person classes and some virtual. The Zoom video conferencing app has become widely popular for academic, professional, and personal use over the past few months to keep us all connected. On Monday morning, the platform experienced widespread outages for meetings & video webinars. The outages lasted from about 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. just as several local colleges where attempting to hold online classes for the first time this semester. Temple, Widener, and Penn State reported problems. By Monday afternoon the problems were fixed.

The woman who was caught on video attacking a lector at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul during mass on Sunday morning, 8/23, is now in police custody. It happened during the 11 a.m. mass which was being streamed live by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. 40-year-old Sarah Contrucci, a longtime lector, was walking out of the sanctuary when the suspect punched her twice in the face and fled the church. Contrucci is doing well. She said, "I hope that she learns to love the Lord and maybe even come back to Mass someday and is respectful," Contrucci said. Contrucci said the woman mumbled something before striking her. "Something about respecting God and I couldn't make out much else. I was worried she was going to attempt to make a scene of some sort to disrupt the Mass, so I was thinking I could do everything to keep the situation calm and respectful... I just wanted to get back to my pew and allow the Mass to resume." The suspect has not been charged, police continue to investigate.
