Thousands Protest in Philadelphia; Center City, Franklinville, Osage Ave, South Philly, Art Museum

There were a variety of mostly peaceful demonstrations throughout the Philadelphia area on Saturday, 6/13. The largest gathering was a march to defund the police, more specifically to reallocate parts of police budget to other services better able to service the community in that capacity. It started at Broad and Callowhill Streets outside the location of the next police headquarters at the old Inquirer building. The thousands of protestors made their way south on Broad, around City Hall, and then east on Market to Old City.

In South Jersey, a few hundred protestors returned to the streets for a Black Lives Matter protest in the memory of George Floyd. The march happened in Franklinville, Gloucester County. The demonstration went by the same location from last week where a now ex-FedEx employee and a suspended New Jersey Corrections officer recreated Floyd's death with one kneeling on the other. This week was without incident.

Another group gathered at 62nd and Osage Avenue in West Philadelphia to remember the 35th anniversary of the MOVE bombing on May 13, 1985 and to protest police brutality. They then marched to Malcolm X Park.

A group of a few dozen people gathered in South Philadelphia at Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street. They were armed with bats, sticks, and guns and said they were there to guard the statue of Christopher Columbus which sits on the west side of the park along the southbound lanes. The cities of Wilmington, DE, and Camden, NJ, both recently removed their statues of Columbus preemptively ahead of protests, but residents of South Philly are making it clear that they don't want to see anything happen to this one. There is also large Columbus monument at Penn's Landing. There are reports that the group in South Philly has been aggressive and hostile to at least one journalist who was trying to document the scene. (see below).

Local musicians Jeff Bradshaw and Sam Gellerstein put together a 'flash' concert on the steps of the Art Museum on Saturday afternoon. It was called "A Clarion Call for Justice." They put out an open call for all brass instrumentalists to meet at the steps and they went from there.
