| PHL City ID Now Available at City Hall; Body Found in Schuylkill River; Hahnemann Lays Off 175 |

The City of Philadelphia has launched its own official municipal identification card. This new government-issued photo ID is called the PHL City ID. It is intended for city residents that do not have access to or a prevented from obtaining other forms of state identification such as a driver's license. You must be 13 years or older, live in Philadelphia, and provide proof of identity and residency. The PHL City ID will show the cardholder's name, address, date of birth and self-identified gender plus a photo.The card will serve as ID within Philadelphia. It will provide access to schools, city buildings, rec centers, and serve as a library card. The city is also working on partnerships to provide cardholders with other benefits and discounts. Cards cost $5 for juveniles, $10 for adults, and free for seniors. "I can't imagine what not having an ID must be like on a daily basis," said Mayor Jim Kenney. "Everything you do, everything you try to do, everything you access or try to access needs identification."

A body was found in the Schuylkill River in Montgomery County on Thursday afternoon, 4/4. The discovery was made around 6:30 p.m. off River Road east of Hollow Road in Lower Merion. The age, race, and gender of the victim are not known at this time. The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.
UPDATE: The body has been identified as 37-year-old Geoff Partridge of Villanova. Partridge went missing on December 5th, 2018. His Jeep was found later that day partially submerged in the river in the same area he was found. His death has been ruled a suicide.

Hahnemann Hospital laid off 175 employees on Thursday, 4/4. Declining patient numbers and shrinking revenue were cited as reasons. 65 nurses, 22 service and technical employees, and 88 non-union workers were let go.
A statement from the hospital:
"Hahnemann Hospital is the latest example of the ongoing health care crisis that has impacted every hospital in Philadelphia, all of whom struggle to obtain fair compensation for the safety net services they provide. We are proud to serve our community, but the reality is that Hahnemann faces severe financial challenges that threaten its ability to survive. In response, the Hospital has undertaken a comprehensive turnaround plan that requires a wide range of difficult decisions, including the need to reduce the size of our workforce to align to current patient volumes. For these reasons, effective today the Hospital will implement a workforce reduction of 175 employees including nurses, support staff, and managers."
Drexel University College of Medicine said:
"Drexel University College of Medicine continues to have an important academic affiliation and collaborative relationship with Hahnemann University Hospital, which is owned by American Academic Health System (AAHS). Although Hahnemann is a key resource for the clinical education of Drexel's medical students, the College of Medicine has academic affiliations with more than 20 clinical training sites. Drexel faculty continue their commitment to providing the best possible training for resident physicians employed by AAHS.
Drexel cannot comment on the business affairs of AAHS, as Drexel's financial and business operations are independent of the hospital. It is Drexel's intention to maintain its current level of patient care and educational activities at the hospital.
The College of Medicine's focus is always on the best interests of its patients, students, faculty and staff." |
