Shipwreck on Stone Harbor Beach; Philly Homicide Captain Reassigned; Yang Tried to Flee Country

Remains of wooden ship wreck appeared on the beach in Stone Harbor, Cape May County, over the weekend before Christmas. A local historian believes the 25-foot-long vessel could be the D. H. Ingraham. It was a schooner heading to Richmond, Virginia loaded with a shipment of limes. In 1886, a fire broke out and five crew members were rescued. There is no way to know for sure. SE winds and shifting sands must have unearthed the ship's remains. The wooden pegs and copper nails still hold together some of the wooden ribs and timbers. It could disappear to the sea just as easily at it came when the wind changes back around.

The head of the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit has been reassigned after a year with the highest murder rates in over a decade. Captain Jack Ryan will be moved to another division and will be replaced by Captain Jason Smith of the Major Crimes Unit to be announced on Friday. The shakeup is not due to the rising murder rate but rather unspecified internal matters. Ryan is not being demoted. Murders are up 11% from 2017. As of December 26th, there were 346 homicides this year, 311 in 2017, and 389 in 2007 (see crime stats).

A former Lehigh University chemistry student that has been charged with poisoning his roommate is back in custody in Northampton County Jail after trying to flee the country. 23-year-old Yukai Yang posted $200,000 cash bail and tried to get deported back to China to avoid prosecution. "Mr. Yang thought that because he is a foreign national, now here illegally in that his student visa has been revoked, that he could post bail, waive his right to a deportation hearing and abscond," District Attorney John Morganelli said in a statement. "That will not happen." Yang is accused of slowly poisoning his long time roommate Juwan Royal last spring. He put thallium in his food and drinks. Yang also is accused of writing racist messages on Royal's belongings. Yang admitted to buying the chemicals, but said he planned on using them on himself if he did poorly on exams. Yang is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation and other charges. Prosecutors are looking into a possible second poisoning victim. They plan to ask the judge to withhold bail.
