FBI agents and state police were busy on Friday executing numerous search warrants against IBEW Local 98 business manager Johnny 'Doc' Dougherty and Philadelphia City Councilman Bobby Henon. Agents removed cardboard boxes full of evidence as well as several computers from almost a dozen locations. They searched Dougherty's Moyamensing Ave. home in South Philadelphia as well as his sister's house next door. They also stopped at his bar called Doc's Union Pub and at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 headquarters at 17th and Spring Garden. Councilman Henon formerly worked as the political director for the union. His 4th floor City Hall offices and his 6th District offices on Torresdale Ave. were searched. FBI agents also paid a visit to the Mount Laurel home of union president Brian Burrows. This is all part of an on-going investigation, possibly over the misuse of union funds. Johnny Doc stood by outside his home while agents did their work. Many in the neighborhood showed their support for him, some shouting praise as they drove by.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court declined a request by the state's Attorney General to halt the upcoming trial against her. Kathleen Kane wanted the state's highest court to hear her claim that the investigation against her was illegal and unconstitutional saying the special prosecutor and grand jury that investigated her was unlawful. The court turned away her request. Kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury material to the press and then lying about it under oath in front of another grand jury. Officially she's charge with obstruction and perjury. Jury selection will begin on Monday in Norristown.

Last year when Pope Francis visited Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families, a significant portion of Center City was shut off to vehicle traffic. Besides being blessed by the Holy Father, an interesting and wonderful thing happened over those few days. People came outside, rode bikes, walked, played games, and enjoyed the wide open areas car-free. An group called Open Streets PHL came together to figure out how to recreate that atmosphere on a regular basis. Today, Mayor Kenney announced the first Philly Free Streets event to take place on Saturday, September 24th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 7+ miles of vehicle free road. The area includes South Street (river to river), the Schuylkill River Trail, Martin Luther King Drive, and West Fairmount Park. There will be free, family-friendly activities throughout the route. Tonight,
Partly Cloudy, temperatures in the low 80s/upper 70s this evening in Center City
