Philly Sgt. Uses Fake Name; Christie, Parents Vaccine Choice; Preppie Drug Ring Sentenced

A Philadelphia Police officer is facing charges after he used a fake name and birthday when attempting to surrender three handguns at a police station. 28-year-old Sgt. Brandon Ruff went to the 35th Police District headquarters on August 3rd, 2014 in civilian clothes and carrying a bag containing three handguns. He told officers the guns belonged to a family member and gave them the name â€œRyan Jonesâ€ with a fabricated birthdate. Ruff became agitated and went outside where officers noticed a bulge in his waistband, which turned out to be his privately owned gun. Back inside the station Ruff refused to give an ID or permit to carry but a search of his person turned up his police identification. The guns he surrendered all came back to different owners and one was reported stolen in South Philadelphia in 2010. Sgt. Ruff has been charged with one count of False Identification to Law Enforcement Authorities. Ruff had filed a police brutality suit against several officers of the 35th district following the incident claiming he suffered sprained wrists as they attempted to take his personal weapon and determine if he had a permit to carry.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said Monday that parents should have some choice in deciding whether or not to vaccinate their children. His remarks came while visiting a biomedical research center at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom on a trade mission. The governor said that he and his wife did vaccinate their own children believing that it is an important part of protecting their own health and the public. But he says that there needs to be some level of balance because parents should have some choice. He said that "not every vaccine is created equal. And not every disease type is as great a public health threat as others." A statement from his office clarified his statements saying that the governor "believes vaccines are an important public health protection and with a disease like measles there is no question kids should be vaccinated." New Jersey is one of 20 states that allow parents to obtain personal belief waivers to opt out of vaccines, however, they must be religious or medical in nature and not just philosophical, moral, secular, or of a more general nature.

A Haverford School graduate who prosecutors say was the lieutenant, or #2 in charge, of a drug ring dubbed the 'Main Line Takeover Project' was sentenced today to 9-23 months in prison followed by 5 years probation. 19-year-old Timothy Brooks of Villanova plead guilty last fall for his participation in a corrupt organization, conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute. Today in court he apologized for his actions and several supporters testified on his behalf regarding his progress undergoing drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Montgomery County Judge Steven O'Neil and prosecutor Tonya Lupinacci said that justice still needed to be served and Brooks had to be sentenced for his crimes. The drug ring sold weed and other drugs to Main Line high schools and colleges. Eleven people involved in the ring were arrested last April. The leader, 25-year-old Neil Scott, has already been sentenced to 5 to 15 years.
