Regusters Statement Tossed Out; NJ Soccer Teen Passes; Temple U Patrols Expanded

Today, in the case against Christina Regusters, who is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 5-year-old West Philadelphia girl, the judge declared a statement she gave to Philadelphia Police inadmissible because she was not given proper Miranda warnings. She was read her rights at two previous times but not immediately before being questioned the night she was taken into custody. Judge Jeffrey Minehart ruled that her statement that night cannot be introduced into evidence. In that statement, Regusters had told detectives that she had no involvement in the crime despite being shown the evidence against her, including DNA. She said it was someone else. On the stand today, Regusters said that she that some parts of the statement were true, others weren't, she just wanted to get it over with. The jury was not present for these proceedings.

Police are saying that a teenage soccer player injured in a weekend car crash, along with 4 teammates, has died. 14-year-old Aisling Cooke of Linwood, NJ was placed on life support on Saturday morning after the crash. She died on Wednesday. Cooke and her teammates from Mainland Regional High School were on their way to a charity tournament when the crash occurred on Route 40 in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County. The chain reaction crash involved a pickup truck, a box truck, and a car. The other injured girls were treated at the hospital and released. The school district is helping students cope.

Temple University has announced that it is extending the borders of its police patrols by several blocks around main campus. In an effort to provide a secure campus and beyond for students, staff, and faculty, including those who live off campus the police patrols will now be going an extra two blocks or so further. This will also help keep the greater community safer. The new patrols will now extend from 9th St to 18th St (east to west) and Susquehanna Ave to Jefferson Ave (north to south).
