North Wales Murder-Suicide Attempt; Temple Memorial for Katz; School Police Officer found Dead

A woman was injured and a man found dead in an apparent failed murder suicide in Montgomery County this morning. The shootings took place around 10 a.m. at a home along the 2200 block of Harvard Drive in North Wales, Montgomery Township. Neighbors reported hearing two gun shots a few seconds apart. The female suffered a gun shot to the chest and was airlifted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Numerous officers and SWAT team members responded to the area, evacuating neighbors and locking down the area. Eventually the man was found inside the home, a victim of his own hand. Neighbors were allowed back home at 1 pm. Police are not releasing the identity of the victim or suspect at this time.

Temple University has made plans for a memorial service for Lewis Katz, the Inquirer co-owner who was killed in a plane crash over the weekend. The service will be on Wednesday at 11am in the schoolâ€™s Performing Arts Center (formerly known as the Baptist Temple), on North Broad Street. Katz is a 1963 graduate of Temple. He has long been a supporter of the university both financially and through his leadership. Katz received an honorary doctorate last month and announced plans to donate $25 million to the school.

A Philadelphia School District police officer was found dead in a bathroom today after suffering a medical emergency. 50-year-old Sgt. Daryl Giles was assigned to George Washington High School on the 10000 block of Bustleton Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. This morning Giles was involved in breaking up a scuffle between students. He reportedly wasn't feeling well and had some chest pains after the incident. A staff member found him collapsed in the bathroom and attempts were made to resuscitate him. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Giles was a 19 year veteran of the school police force. An autopsy will determine his exact cause of death.
