Student Pulls Gun at CCP; Philly Won't Bid on 2024 Olympics; Bear in Chalfont, Bucks

Early this afternoon a student at the Community College of Philadelphia rushed into a classroom and pulled a gun on a classmate. The confrontation led officials to evacuate the building and lockdown nearby middle and high schools. Around 12 noon, 23-year-old Ryan Martinez Fitch entered a chemistry class and argued with one of the students. He allegedly brandish a gun which prompted everyone to leave. Fitch then left the building. 911 was called and Police, SWAT, and Homeland Security responded. The building was evacuated and searched. Nearby Julia R. Masterman School, Ben Franklin High School and Franklin Learning Center were all placed on lockdown. Fitch was taken into custody at about 1:30 p.m. at his apartment building in the 9500 block of State Road in Northeast Philadelphia. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the argument but it may have been about a girl.

UPDATE: Fitch was arraigned and charged with possession of a weapon on school property, making terroristic threats, simple assault and reckless endangerment of another person.

Philadelphia will not be making a bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2024. Mayor Michael Nutter announced today that the city is removing itself from the list of US cities interested in hosting the 2024 games. Nutter notified the US Olympic Committee today. His decision came after months of consideration and research on the financial impact and available infrastructure in the city. Nutter said, â€œIt is millions and millions of dollars â€” probably in the hundreds of millions of dollars â€” to host such an enterprise.â€ The city already has a few major events on the near horizon that demand attention. The World Meeting of Families is in 2015 and a potential Democratic Convention in 2016. Philadelphia was one of 5 US cities to submit a bid for the 2016 games that are being held in Rio de Janeiro.

There is another bear roaming around Bucks County. This one has been spotted in Chalfont Borough and New Britain Township. The bear was spotted numerous times Wednesday morning roaming around town. Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are monitoring the black bear's movements and will attempt to tranquilize it if it can get a chance. Officials estimate that it weighs around 300 lbs. It does have tags on it's ears, so if they are able to capture the animal they'll be able to determine where else it's been and where it may have come from. If you see the bear, stay away, do not feed it, and call 911.
